Making Your Own Customized Cushions with Fabric for Outdoor Furniture is Cheaper – Part 1

I have a very oddly shaped Adirondack chair and it’s made of resin. Hard, uncomfortable resin. When I get home from work, I like to sit and read a book in my chair on the little deck that is my favorite refuge in the city. After about 10 minutes of twisting and turning and trying to get comfortable in that hard resin chair, I realize I need a cushion - something soft and inviting that will make my chair with its long sloped back probably the most comfortable place in the world. And wouldn’t it be a fabulous bonus if the outdoor furniture fabric was hip and fashionable and contributed to the overall feel of my deck space? So off I trek to my local hardware store to scope out my options for an Adirondack chair cushion.

Now everywhere I look I see Adirondack chairs. So why oh why do there not seem to be any cushions in a place that sells these chairs in about 11 different colors? I checked out some of the generic cushions and they were $60!!! I paid less than $20 for the chair itself! I think I’m totally getting scammed here. I left without my pillow and spent another night sitting on a hard chair.

If you’re having the same problem, buy some outdoor furniture fabric and create your own customized cushions for a fraction of the price. Making your own outdoor cushions is easy and is a great option if you have awkwardly shaped furniture such as an Adirondack chair.

Fabric for outdoor furniture comes in all patterns and styles. There are a few very good brand names for outdoor furniture fabric such as Sunbrella, and Waverly’s Sun N Shade line. It’s important to make sure the fabric you use is made for outdoor use so that it won’t fade in the sun or grow mildew. Using canvas fabric for outdoor furniture is the traditional choice, and it can be a bit cheaper than the other brands, but consider spending the extra money to have your cushions last longer. Sunbrella fabric is so sturdy that it’s often used for boat awnings. The Sun N Shade line has some beautiful outdoor patterns, including the Wailea Coast in Soleil (my personal favorite). Pick a few yards of an outdoor furniture fabric that you’ll love and you’ll have a comfortable spot to sit in no time.

Check back soon for Part 2 where I’ll describe my adventures in finally making a cushion for my Adirondack chair!
