Wooden Lawn Furniture Creates a Timeless Look

If you want to create a classic feel on your deck or patio, wooden lawn furniture is the way to go. For thousands of years, wood was really the only choice for outdoor furniture. No matter what the current style, wooden lawn furniture will look classic and won’t “date” your outdoor space. When deciding on a type of wood for your next patio set, take into account that there are specific advantages that come with each type of wood. The more resistant, slow-growing, and rare a wood is, the more expensive. The more available woods may be less resistant to the elements, but may be very budget friendly.

Teak

Teak is the obvious choice for your wooden deck furniture. It’s extremely resistant to the elements and its natural honey color is absolutely gorgeous. To keep the natural color, you’ll need to oil your furniture periodically; otherwise it turns a weathered grey that can also be very pretty. Designers are using teak to create extremely modern and stylish outdoor dining pieces and even bars. The only real downside of teak is its price. You’ll have to look at is as an investment as teak dining sets typically cost from $1200 - $6000.

Bamboo

Technically, bamboo is a grass, but I’m including it here because it looks so much like wood. Bamboo patio furniture is a great alternative to “real” wooden lawn furniture if you’re concerned about the impact of forestry on the environment. Bamboo grows extremely quickly, making it one of the few sustainable “wood” products available on the market. Use bamboo patio furniture to create a relaxing zen-like atmosphere. Bamboo is also the preferred material for the celebrated “tiki bar”.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a great alternative to teak if you’re looking for wooden lawn furniture. It has a similar gorgeous honey tone, but grows much more quickly than the slow-growing teak trees and is therefore more biologically sustainable. Eucalyptus patio furniture is resistant to insects and water damage in the same way as teak is, and it’s typically half the price of teak. What else can I say? Fantastic!

Other Woods

Other woods used for wooden deck furniture include red cedar, (usually is the wood for choice for the Adirondack chair) and redwood. Cedar patio furniture typically requires a protective coating to keep out moisture and prevent rot. Redwood patio furniture comes in three classifications; old growth, mature, and young. You’ll pay more anything made from old-growth redwood, but it’s a much harder wood and will typically last longer than the other types of redwood. Also, the older the wood, the more likely there will be a long warrantee attached to it.

Whatever your tastes, there’s a type of wooden patio furniture that will fit your budget and your deck or patio!
